Herzogenaurach, February 2nd, 2023 - This season, adidas Spezial returns to present its Pre-Spring collection. Venturing into the outdoors, the brand embarks on an expertly curated exploration of functional cues and timeless styles.
The footwear offering is made up of six unique silhouettes. First up, the Hochelaga SPZL from 2016 returns in a navy suede iteration with yellow stripes inspired by the vintage adidas Montreal. Accompanying the reissue is the Hochelaga Super – which features a white leather construction with navy and red 'edged' stripes (a detail that is synonymous with many mid-to-late 80s releases). Similarly, the Hartness SPZL takes inspiration from 1980s runners with an upper pattern that draws on the all-weather adidas HRC with a revised tooling and heel clip – and arrives in a triple black colorway with an aditex membrane (and branding) built into the upper. The upper is predominantly leather with a mesh vamp and reflective detailing on the quarters and heel mustaches. Next is the Arkesden SPZL which blends a classic Campus tooling with an upper pattern that is rooted in the iconic Lacombe SPZL with the addition of stripes and eyelets. The result is a timeless look which comprises a rich brown suede upper (that nods to the Topanga SPZL) sat atop a dark cupsole with contrasting flock stripes.
Another new silhouette arrives in the form of the Hiaven SPZL – a worthy successor to the Winterhill SPZL which boasts an outdoor focused construction with an aditex membrane and protective rubber mudguard. From outdoor functionality to European flair, the Denim Italia SPZL reimagines the classic 70s model in a premium denim execution, offering an updated (and improved) take on the early 2000s version of this now iconic release. Finally, rounding off the footwear offering is the Newrad SPZL, which was originally introduced in Fall/Winter 2020 but is reimagined for the colder seasons in monochrome dark brown leather with a gusset tongue.
Turning from footwear to apparel and accessories, adidas Spezial’s Pre-Spring 2023 collection features a number of highly crafted looks with a focus on recycled fabrics. Headlining the collection are two distinct outerwear pieces: the Feniscowles Jacket and the Kearsley Jacket. Inspired by Spring/Summer 2019’s Wardour Jacket, the olive green Feniscowles Jacket is an update on one of Spezial's most iconic looks, awash with technical pockets and boasting a 100% recycled polyester construction. Similarly, the Kearsley Jacket takes inspiration from Fall/Winter 2016’s Lammack Parka and boasts a two-tone orange colorway in a 100% recycled polyamide construction.
In quintessentially Spezial fashion, the collection also plays host to an elevated tracksuit: for PreSpring 2023 it’s the Tockholes TT and TP in a 100% recycled fleece construction. A selection of tshirts and polos, meanwhile, offer a number of perfect layering opportunities. The seasonal offering is then completed with the inclusion of the Feniscowles Hat – a modern take on the under-celebrated Deerstalker silhouette featuring adjustable ear flaps and a 100% recycled polyester material makeup.
The launch of the adidas Spezial Pre-Spring 2023 collection is accompanied by a campaign film which embarks on an unexpected journey in the wilds of Iceland. Celebrating the eternal and awe-inspiring connection between humans and nature, the evocative visuals are fronted by Stephen Graham — one of Britain’s finest actors and a supporter of adidas Spezial since its inception. The film also features cameos from Icelandic film director Fridrik Thor Fridriksson and Hilmar Orn Hilmarsson who soundtracked the composition. Representing a full-circle moment for adidas Spezial, the film stills are shot by longtime collaborator Kevin Cummins — the heralded music photographer who also captured Stephen Graham for the line’s first ever season.
The latest adidas Spezial collection arrives in limited quantities on February 10th and is available through Confirmed and select retailers.
