In an interview with soundofviolence, Liam Fray talked about the Manchester music scene and football and revealed what it means to him to be a Manchester band.
"Manchester is the town of Joy Division, the Smiths, New Order, Oasis ... We always mention these bands, very good bands, but for me Elbow should be part of this list of cult groups from the city. We look too much at the Manchester past even though, as I said before, it has produced incredible bands. I think we must live in the present. There are plenty of new bands in town like Blossoms. The more we look at the past, the less we look at what is happening now and it is a shame really."
Then when asked about Manchester United picking "Not Nineteen Forever" when they won their 20th title, Fray said:
"I cried. When the team embarked on a victory parade to celebrate their 20th title in the streets of the city with Bobby Charlton, Alex Ferguson, Wayne Rooney ... Our song, the joy in the city was incredible. When you're little you dream of writing a song for the team you love? It was a dream come true really."
