A BPP Professional Education Creative Artworker, Amber Engle, has been rewarded in a global competition to promote the iconic Channel 4 series, This Is England. Amber Engle was one of three UK artists to be Highly Commended in a Channel 4 and Talenthouse interactive marketing campaign which tasked applicants to ‘Design a 90s Rave’ poster and capture the UK club culture during the early 1990s. Amber, 32, will receive £500 and have her work showcased across Channel 4’s digital and social channels to promote the upcoming This Is England ’90 series.

Amber Engle said: "As a former raver and lover of This is England, I saw this brief and knew I had to take part. I decided to take the more do-it-yourself approach, as I remembered a lot of the raves I had gone to did. The graphics are simple, the fonts are those used back in the late 80s to early 90s, and the use of 2 colour adds a "trippy" factor to the layout, whilst the smiley face is a nod to the acid house culture. I have made the poster to look cut-out, torn, highlighted and photocopied as it was done back then when they didn't have much money. Thank you for the opportunity to go down memory lane!Amber Engle."

Her piece centres around the early ’90s rave scene and took around six hours to research and complete. Amber, who lives in Manchester’s Northern Quarter, said: “I tried to take the more hand-rendered, simple approach that many would have done back then without access to what we have now in terms of graphic design technology.

“I took geometric shapes and altered them to create a slightly ‘trippy’, optical illusion effect, whilst using basic style fonts that were popular at the time, and keeping it simple with just two colours.”
