‘Ocean Colour Scene New EP’

My love for Ocean Colour Scene dates back to catching them open for Oasis at Islington Cowshed, Edinburgh back in 96. In the months that followed I got my hands on what I thought was their debut album Moseley Shoals and my love affair with the band truly started. Skip forward another couple of years and OCS come to my hometown of Stirling and play 3 now legendary dates at the Castle.

Earning round £3 per hour at the time, I managed to get myself a ticket for one of the dates and then paid security a tenner on one of the other nights to slip me in. Even now I remember hearing the soundcheck after climbing a tree in the graveyard to try and catch a glimpse of the band. It was that weekend some 20 years ago, perhaps as I scraped my body and fell all the way down the tree that OCS became ingrained in my blood and would remain so to the present day.

I'm not the only one though and OCS has something of a hardcore fan-base in Scotland and over the years I have been lucky enough to meet many great people through a mutual love of all things OCS. Needless to say, after no new material in 7 years, the release of an EP with 4 new songs on it has got my blood pumping!

The unmistakable guitar sound of Steve Cradock alongside Simon ‘Foxy’ Fowler’s vocals on opening track 'Another Bard May Chant' gets the hair standing on the back of my neck from the opening seconds. Surprisingly, there’s something of dark edge, dare I say it raw anger to Simon’s vocal as he delivers the opening verse “the chief’s got bloody hands, he’s a war criminal”. The up-tempo floor stomper is the song us fans have been waiting (too long) for and it doesn’t disappoint. Boosted by some horns, this song has all the makings of a live monster and fans will be hoping it becomes a staple on the set-list of the upcoming tour.

A warm glow radiates from ‘Be With You’ with Simon’s stunning vocal shining alongside the horns once again whilst ‘Because Your Mine’ is a tender, heart-felt acoustic ballad that hooks the listener and transports the mind to a place of beauty. With its infectious horns, final track, ‘Standing In The Place’ is another I hope to hear the extended OCS touring band unleash live. It’s a hypnotic finale to the 4 track EP that will leave everyone wanting more and as the song fades out I punch my fist in the air and chant “OCS, OCS, OCS”!
